Trip Details

Visit iconic yet complicated Southern cities (New Orleans, Selma, Tuskegee, Savannah and Charleston), where millions of enslaved people first entered the United States, yet where African diaspora culture, instead of being totally eradicated or homogenized, was heroically preserved by former slaves and thrives today in music, food, religious and artistic traditions. Meet people who help us gain further insight into the turbulent past and those who work to preserve priceless traditions.

Oct Tour Host Kyra Henderson is a proud graduate and alumni of the University of Mississippi where she graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a minor in African American studies. She currently works as the Logistics Coordinator and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities and Director of the world renowned Rust College A Cappella Choir at Rust College. She has extensive expertise in Historical Interpretation and Research and has worked in the field of journalism interning at WTVA news station, field reporting for NewWatch Ole Miss, and a host of other publications. Most recently she was the lead Historical Interpreter at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. Her passion is focused on the role that education plays in bringing awareness to social and cultural issues in contemporary society. She believes that exposing people of all ages to a deeper understanding of history as it really happened is the catalyst we need to ensure change. Whenever she can, she enjoys accompanying groups through the South and sharing her experiences and knowledge. Kyra will lead the Oct 2025 departure.
